Getting rid of dandruff

Anti-dandruff remedies

When I was little I got dandruff here and there. I thought it was something you "get" from someone - like using the same hairbrush or something similar.

Well, luckily it's not like that, dandruff isn't contagious. But it's an issue that can cause an itchy scalp, flaking of the skin and several unpleasant things.

Some people may get dandruff because of dry skin, some don't shampoo the right way, or it could be a medical condition. Either way, it's unpleasant.

With me, dandruff comes and goes. It's mostly connected to how well I take care of my scalp. I get irritation bumps from shampoos (allergies, I guess?) and the flakes come after that. It gets worse during colder months (dry air anyone?).

But I found out that having a hair routine helps with most of my problems. Let's see what to do to get rid of dandruff

How to get rid of dandruff?

1. Use a scalp peeling

Lots of times our scalp is forgotten. We do shampoo it and that's pretty much it, isn't it?
That's the case for me, or well, it was. Until I found out that a good scalp massage can do all the difference.

Now I use a scalp peeling once a week and I can say that my head does feel better.
I picked up the TRESemméPurify & Hydrate scalp and hair peeling from Notino. I like that it has a cooling effect and that it leathers up nicely.  Plus the scent is lovely - not something I'd expect it to have. It's a tad flowery.

TRESemmé Purify & Hydrate Cleansing Peeling for Hair and Scalp

Experience the feeling of having perfectly clean hair. The TRESemmé Purify & Hydrate hair scrub removes impurities, sebum and product build-up more thoroughly than a regular shampoo. You’ll instantly notice the difference and fall in love with this product.

  • thoroughly removes impurities and sebum
  • loosens dandruff and dead skin cells
  • stimulates and refreshes the scalp

2.  Shampoo more

Sometimes we're in a hurry and we just want to get over with hair washing which can leave our scalp and hair not all that well cleaned.

When shampooing pay close attention that you are gently massaging your whole head and not just the top of it. Shampoo and massage also the back of your ears, the top of your neck, etc.

3. You need a stronger shampoo

Sometimes our shampoos are too gentle to do the job well. I prefer using such shampoos. But when dandruff shows up, it's time for the big guns. Something stronger, something that is targeted especially for dandruff - then it's time for dandruff shampoo

I picked up two such shampoos.
One is a people favourite - Neutrogena T/Gel Forte shampoo.

Our dermatologist-recommended shampoo effectively controls the most resistant scalp conditions, like dandruff, with twice the amount of active ingredient as T/Gel® Original Formula. This formula contains Neutar® (1% Coal Tar), proven to control your flaky, itchy scalp for hours after it’s rinsed out. Its rich, amber formula gently cleanses, and the added conditioners leave hair manageable and soft.

And the other, gentler is the Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Scalp Genesis Anti-Dandruff Shampoo.

Schwarzkopf BC Scalp Genesis Rebalancing Serum is rebalancing fluid for scalps prone to dandruff. With StemCode Complex and vitamin E, the formula rebalances sensitive scalps and helps to prevent visible dandruff flakes.

Both are effective, I just pick the one I'm feeling more in that instant.

4. Moisturize your scalp

If you noticed that your dandruff is getting worse during the winter months, it may be just dry skin. Similar to the skin on the other parts of our bodies, that also may be the reason for dandruff on our heads.

In such a case, pick up a moisturizing hair product that is targeted for dandruff.

5. Talk to a doctor

If nothing else helps then you may need a specific type of medication.
Either it is a skin condition or some sort of yeast or maybe even an allergic reaction you can't point your finger at, then getting some help may be the most beneficial thing you could do.

Let me know if the comments what helped with your dandruff.
