Until recently I don't think I've ever heard about catalytic lamps. I stumbled upon them as I was browsing the Notino site, picking what should I get next.
They caught my interest and I wanted to see how they would work for me. That's why I went on a small research journey. And do you know what I found out?
Ashleigh & Burwood London Fairy Ball Catalytic Lamp
I picked a set as it came out to be the cheapest option to get all I needed for getting started. It came to be about 45€.
The Ashleigh & Burwood London Fairy Ball catalytic lamp is the perfect accessory for your home and office, in hotels and spas. The secret of the catalytic lamp is based on the principle of a catalytic reaction – burning without a flame. The lamp is designed both to add fragrance to a room and to clean and disinfect the air in enclosed spaces.
In the Ashleigh & Burwood set there is included:
- A catalytic lamp (I picked the fairy ball as it's super pretty and sparkly)
- Lamp fragrance
- Small funnel
- Wick and stone
I really liked the idea of a catalytic lamp as it's less wasteful compared to regular candles. Once you use up the lamp fragrance, you just refill it!
I like it also because:
- can safely be left unattended
- destroys all odours in the room, including cigarette smoke, cooking fumes or pet odours
- gives the whole space a beautiful fragrance
Since in our home, there's a pet living (Pablo the dog!) you could definitely smell him once you got into my apartment. I didn't like that as candles didn't do the trick, scented stuff didn't do the trick and I was hoping that a catalytic lamp would do it.
The instructions are simple:
The packaging contains a refill for the catalytic lamp. Remove the decorative and extinguishing lids from the lamp, then use the funnel to pour the fragrant essence in until two-thirds full. Put the wick and stone back in the lamp and close with the extinguishing lid. After about 20 minutes, once the fragrance has risen from the wick to the stone, take a lighter and light the stone. Let the flame burn for 3-5 minutes, then blow it out and cover the stone with the decorative lid. The catalytic process has now begun and the lamp will start to emit a scent. When you reach the desired intensity of the fragrance, swap the decorative lid for the extinguishing lid. Use according to the instructions included.
I followed the instructions and found out that not only did it remove the dog scent from our home it also gave a lovely scent to the whole apartment!
The only downside is that the scent can get quickly overpowering so you should stay close by just in case you would want to keep it less intense.
I like the fresh linen scent but next time I'll try something less "cool" and warmer. The scent feels exactly as if I would've walked into a closet full of freshly washed sheets. And I like that but I was expecting the scent to be more of a fair softener scent. But it's okay, I still like it and enjoy it.
The first time the use took a longer as the wick needed to be soaked for a while (20 minutes) before the first use. But now it's a breeze. I just light it for 3-5 minutes and then cover it with the decorative lid and let it do its job.
Because the set comes in a very classy looking box it would be a perfect housewarming gift. I am sure everyone would be happy to have such a beautiful product on display.
Overall:
I am happy to have ventured into the unknown (to me) realm of catalytic lamps. Now that I have my very own, all I need to do is to get some more lamp perfumes for when I will want to mix it up.
I am happy with the lamp as it keeps my home smelling fresh and free of doggy odours. I couldn't recommend this enough!
